The Brief to Invoice newsletter

One real client brief, scoped and priced.

Every fortnight, I take one realistic client request and show you how I would turn it into paid work: what it really means, what I would ask, what belongs in the scope, what I would leave out and how I would price it.

Inside each issue

The client’s first message is only the beginning.

A request is not yet a brief. Each issue follows the decisions that turn an unclear enquiry into a defined piece of work.

The request

The message as it arrives, before it has been cleaned up or translated into technical language.

The underlying need

What the client is actually trying to improve, remove, save or earn.

The questions

What I would ask before agreeing to features, timescales or a price.

The scope

What belongs in the first useful version—and what should explicitly stay out.

The price

The arithmetic, assumptions and trade-offs behind a defensible quote.

The evidence

How the completed work could become stronger professional evidence than another invented portfolio project.

A brief, taken apart

From “we need an app” to a scoped outcome.

The requested technology is often less important than the business problem sitting underneath it.

What the client sent

“We need an app.”

“Looking for a developer to build an app for our physiotherapy clinic. We have two practitioners and take all bookings by phone. Budget around £900.”

What they actually need

Fewer booking calls and fewer missed appointments.

The word “app” describes an imagined solution. The underlying need is a straightforward online booking process with deposits.

What you sent back

A scoped, priced outcome.

Booking system£520
Deposits at booking£330
Total£850
